Genger/Glunz,'Her Land'

The Agency is pleased to present the collaboration of the artist Anna Genger and fashion photographer Daniela Glunz. Her Land is a series of collaborative photographic works and performance sculptures, celebrating a contemporary take on surrealism.
The works begin with sculptures, meticulously handcrafted from cloth, fibreglass and haberdashery. Formally they adhere to the same organic structures which Anna Genger uses in her painting practice. For Genger/Glunz they obtain the dual function of being sculpture and wearabale object. Faintly reminding of the tradition of Bauhaus theatre, they are quick to dismiss their modernist roots. The head and bodypieces are worn by Anna Genger. She consciously exposes her body to the camera with her collaborator Daniela Glunz reacting to the provocation photographically.
As the head of the artist is always concealed the focus is directed towards the apparent auto-eroticism of the works. This is captured and contained by Glunz in photographs, which go beyond documentation. The works reveal the forceful visual negotiation between the two women about an unquantifiable female sexuality, where the model continuously provokes and consciously submits and the photographer fuels the model’s fantasy with her own gaze.
Influenced by burlesque and queer culture, the photographs promise arousal but ultimately represent a complex and changeable female sexuality. Coupled with the sculptures they become another alphabet of identity where the personal and the political are conflated.
Immensely playful and darkly dystopian they elude gender specifiation in a manner that is driven by fluid and speculative desire. Conflating art and theatricality Genger/Glunz seem to rip at the seams of a narrowly defined femininity with a languid ambivalence and a knowing nod to grounds well trodden by mostly male surrealists with the notable exception of Claude Cahun. Avoiding androgynity or gender fluidity as is the case in Cahun’s work, for Genger/Glunz’s the female body is the site of a paradoxical self, which withdraws from co-existing with others.
Anna Genger (*1978) lives and works in Hamburg after residencies in London, Berlin and New York. She also works as part of the collaborative duo Genger/Glunz. Recent exhibitions include solo shows such as Birds of Prey in Galerie Biesenbach, Cologne (2016); Bernice Bobs her Hair, Galerie Biesenbach, Cologne (2014); Belle De Jour, Gallery Bastian, Berlin (2013). Selected group exhibitions include Hildegunde Von Mer, Meerbusch, Germany (2016); Genger&Glunz, Husavik Iceland (2016) and Keine Farbe Schwarz, Freitagssalon, Hamburg (2015). In 2010 Anna Genger was awarded the 2. Eberhard-Dietzsch Price, Geraer bank, Gera.
Daniela Glunz (*1983) lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. She is a freelance photographer and mixed media artist. She works as part of the collaborative duo Genger/Glunz. Her recent exhibitions include artflash no.6, NIP:PON, Hamburg (2014); artflash no.5 DURCH:BRUCH, Hamburg (2014). She also works for German and international fashion editorials.
