Rob Smith's latest work Beacon, sees a road traffic beacon installed in the garden of the Agency Gallery, London.   A camera captures an image of it at regular intervals and adds the image to an animation sequence. At sunset each day the piece is activated and will broadcast the beacon live from the Agency until dawn.

The two intervals, the flashing of the light and the capturing of the images are not synchronised. Therefore, when the images are captured the beacon might be on or off.   During the course of the night randomly generated pattern of on-off is created in an expanding animation sequence. At dawn the next day the animation sequence is reset and displays the last image that was captured until sunset the next day.

Rob Smith is an artist whose practice focuses on the creation of artworks that  are dispersed through digital and networked technologies making links between remote sites and audience. Smith studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1999-2002) and now lives and works in Chipping Ongar, Essex.  He continues to exhibit nationally and internationally in gallery exhibitions as well as developing web-based projects that are disseminated globally.  

Recent exhibitions have included 'What If?' with Yael Bartana, Lemn Sissay, Anti Laitinen, 'Binary Code View' with Anthony Gross and Rafeal Rozendaal at the Agency London, 'British Contemporary Art' Art Issue Projects, Beijing and 'Performed' at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge.  Smith has reached his largest audiences through the development of innovative digital platforms for artworks projects like WINDscale (2007 -2010) created direct links between physical sites and a dispersed global audience and more recently Smith's role in Field Broadcast (2010) used bespoke software to enable 33 artists to make live broadcasts from fields from three continents and reach an audience all over the world.
